Sumida Art Festival opens September 4 at venues including Ryogoku

Sumida City's first comprehensive arts festival brings exhibitions, performances and participatory projects into the neighborhood for nearly four months.

Sumida Art Festival 2026 opens on Friday, September 4, and runs through Sunday, December 20, at sites across Sumida City, including Ryogoku. Organized by the festival committee and Sumida City, it is the ward's first comprehensive arts festival.

In Ryogoku, programs beginning on September 4 include a tour that starts at -Ryogoku- Edo NOREN and bollard artworks around the station. The full lineup extends to galleries, theaters, historic houses, temples, shopping streets and public spaces across the ward, with exhibitions, performances, workshops and participatory projects scheduled during the festival.

The festival is generally closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, although programs may run when those days are public holidays. Participation is free in principle, but some venues and events charge admission or require advance booking. Hours and dates vary by program, so use the official program list to check the venue, schedule, fee and reservation rules before setting out.
